SAINT-BRUNO, Que. -- The Norampac division of Cascades Canada Inc. is closing its Toronto boxboard mill indefinitely, affecting 140 employees.
Norampac said Wednesday the shutdown, effective no later than Sept. 14, is "due to unfavourable factors" including rising costs for labour, fibre and energy.
The Toronto mill has an annual production capacity of 180,000 tons of coated recycled boxboard.
"Unfortunately, we do not have any other choice at this point than to suspend the mill's operations," stated Marc-Andre Depin, CEO of Norampac, which has seven containerboard mills, four boxboard mills, 27 corrugated products plants and five folding carton sites in Canada, the United States and France.
Production of coated recycled boxboard will continue at Norampac's mills in East Angus, Que.; Jonquiere, Que.; and Versailles, Conn.
