ROUND LAKE, Minn. (AP) -- Farley's & Sathers Candy Co., makers of JujyFruits and Now and Later taffy, says it will eliminate about 175 jobs from its headquarters and packaging facility in Round Lake.

The announcement was made to employees during a company-wide meeting Thursday afternoon. The job cuts will happen in the first quarter of 2010.

The layoffs are the result of the company's decision to relocate its packaging, warehousing and fleet operations to facilities in Chattanooga, Tenn., and Dallas, Texas.

In addition to the elimination of jobs in those three areas, six employees in the corporate offices will also lose their jobs.

After the cuts, about 150 employees remain in Round Lake, which is just southeast of Worthington.

Sathers was born in Round Lake, MN and the community has supported this company for 70+ years. It is sad they have chosen to abandon their community and cause the death of the small town that gave them life.

If I was one of the Sathers I would be very upset at Catterton Group for ruining my good name with this move. Let this be a lesson don't sell your good family name with the company to investors who could not care less about the community. Maybe the Sathers should request their name back and let Catterton build up their own new reputation! If Kenny(Sather) is looking down from above--he is not a happy man...
Loyalty  11/9/2009 8:02:00 AM
Management complains that employees are not very loyal any longer. Guess they forgot loyalty is a two way street and both groups have to see the other guy on the street. Moving to the place that gives you tax breaks for a year makes the savings that year great for your top pepoles bonus, but does it help the company out in the long haul? Next the company moves to AMexico, then India, and lastly China so the cost can be lowered while execs get more. Why aren't the working stiffs more loyal. Why aren't the consumers more loyal. Why aren't we doing better?
